Route Description
Have you decided to head down to the coastline, but the kids are getting bored and impatient? A great idea for a short stop is the village of Črni Kal and its fortress, which has a crazy view of the whole of Trieste, the sea, the viaduct and the surrounding villages.
The remains of the old castle are located above the village at the rocky edge. Situated on the road through the Rižana Valley towards Klanec, between the Adriatic Coast and the interior, on the border between the Venetian and Habsburg interests, Črni Kal was mentioned as early as the 11th century. The ruins of a castle overlooking Črni Kal, called Town or Old Town by domicile inhabitants, stand on a 30-metre (98 feet) high cliff that was once reached only by a four-meter-long drawbridge. As the period from the early 15th until the first half of the 17th century was noted for its frequent pillagings, the unapproachable camp was established beneath the fort for the locals to store their possessions.
You can leave your car in the smaller parking lot near the church whereas climbers can leave their vehicles in a parking lot that is a bit higher. A local attraction is the "leaning tower", a belfry of St. Valentine's Church from the 17th century which inclines as a result of the caving in of the ground. A landslide destroyed the former St. Valentine's Church built in 1680. Benko House, which is the oldest rural house in the municipality of Koper, also has important architectural value, as the inscription on the semicircular portal reveals that Andreas and Benco built it in 1489.
The half-hour walk has an amazing view that will leave you speechless.
Interesting Facts
Only a few km from Sokoliče stands the famous Church of Holy Trinity in the village of Hrastovlje.
The Church of Holy Trinity stands on a small elevation above the village, within the walls built for protection. It was sanctified in 1475. The interior is entirely covered by an exceptional medieval and renaissance fresco cycle, the best known in the Slovenian part of Istria. An unusual scene appears in the northern apse. The three Wise Men are seated on the throne and next to them stand the saints Cosmas and Damian. The cycle of the Passion of Christ covers the western and a part of the southern wall, the bottom area of which shows a detailed scene of the Dance of Death.
Dance of Death is a fresco covering a part of the Church of Holy Trinity wall in the village of Hrastovlje. John from Kastav (Johannes de Castua) signed it and wrote the year of its creation (1490).
The seven-meter (22-feet)-long fresco depicts a procession in which representatives of various strata of society and all ages move towards the tomb. From pope, king and queen to monk and citizen to beggar and child, each time paired with a skeleton who does not joke around, does not take bribes, and treats all people equally. Death is relentless and laughs at everybody’s faces. Everyone arrives with her at the same destination: her kingdom of graves. The fresco was probably created under the impression of medieval plague epidemics.

Today, the cliff at Črni Kal is a popular climbing site. It offers rock-climbing fans a variety of routes with different climbing grades and lengths all year round. This modern climbing area has a favorable leeward position, a comfortable flat base and a pleasant environment. We were able to observe the climbers during our trip :).
