The Bohinj Lake is the largest permanent lake in Slovenia, which holds a 100 million cubic meters of water. Its surface area is 4,100 meters (4,483 yards) long, 1,200 meters (1,312 yards) wide and 45 meters (147 feet) deep. It is of tectonic-glacial origin. The Bohinj Lake is home to 53 planktonic algae species, around 60 species of the freshwater zoobenthos and at least 16 fish species: brown trout (Salmo trutta), burbot (Lota lota), chub (Leuciscus cephalus), common minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus), arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), European perch, rainbow trout, rudd, European grayling, crucian carp, catfish, souffia, European bullhead, etc.
In the last 20 years, the number of fish species in Lake Bohinj has tripled for more or less known reasons, such as the uncontrolled influx of non-native fish into the lake. The Savica Waterfall is a karst spring where the Savica River falls from 836 meters (2831 feet) of altitude, 71 meters (232 feet) deep into the pool. A smaller waterfall is situated a bit lower. When there is little rain, the large waterfall dries up and then the small waterfall drains all the groundwater. The Savica River then flows into the Bohinj Lake.
The trail around the lake is not suitable for a baby stroller so make sure to bring a baby carrier. The footpath is quite long and is therefore easy enough for children from 6+ years of age. You can shorten the trip by returning by boat from the Zlatorog Camp back to the village of Ribčev Laz.

There is a small zoo with goats and a children's playground next to the inn. The friendly animal caretaker even allowed us to pet the little goats. The guest house deserves 5 stars for its good food and kindness! While your children get to know the animals, you can admire the beautiful Bohinj Mountains from the inn’s open terrace.

There are many weather proverbs and sayings in folk tradition, such as the Bohinj one: “V Bohinju ima dež ta mlade.” The direct translation says that the rain in Bohinj has babies, but it means that this area gets a lot of rain.
According to experts, Bohinj actually has an average amount of rainy days. It is true, however, that the precipitation is higher than anywhere else. In 2002, the Storžič band presented the humorous song “V bohin ‘ma d’ž ta mvade” based on the proverb above. It is about a man who went on a date to the village of Ukanc. Just when he wanted to kiss his date from Bohinj called Minka, it started to pour. The soaked lovers took advantage of drying their laundry under the roof to cuddle. From then on, the boy praises the rain; because he is convinced he would not have won over his beloved one without it.
