Route Description

Tržič thrives on the two pillars of tourism: hiking and mountain biking. They are complemented by the rich cultural heritage of the town center, and Tržič is a part of the elite society of the Association of Historic Towns of Slovenia. Recently, we were surprised by the addition of a family-friendly city tour, a shorter version of the Tržič Shoe Tour, a hike exclusively for children – THE LITTLE TRŽIČ SHOE TOUR (KORAKEC PO TRŽIŠKO).

The tour guide Neža Vovk tells you many interesting stories about the old medieval town. Hikers of all ages gather in the parking lot at the former BPT Tržič factory and then in about 40 minutes learn all about the rich Tržič handicraft and shoemaking tradition, which is also carefully preserved by the younger generations of Tržič residents. At the end of the tour the children are able to test their scooters (parents, do not forget to bring them) on a brand new pump track. All children aged 2.5 to 8 went crazy on the pump track even after a hike!

The Tržič Shoe Step was co-financed by the Slovenian Tourist Board.

The tour duration is adjusted to the age and interest of the participants. With a guide, you walk around Tržič from approximately 40 minutes to two hours. In addition to strolling around the town and listening to plenty of interesting stories, the children are looking for the right lock for an ancient key, peek into the Germovka ironworks, climb to the Neuhaus Castle or even to St. Joseph. Each tour is tailored to the wishes and expectations of the group.

The price for the guide is 25 euros per family (2 adults and up to 6 children). If two or more families decide to come here together, the date of the visit can be arranged according to your wishes. Regular tours take place on Saturdays at 4 p.m. Prior registration is required.

We have SOME GREAT NEWS FOR ALL OF OUR FOLLOWERS ;) Tržič Tourist Information Center offers a 7.5-euro discount for all that mention the Family Trips website. Thus the promotional price of the Little Tržič Shoe Tour for two families is 35 euros.

Interesting Facts

Do you know the story of the dragon from the rooster’s egg?

Even today, you can observe large blocks of rock in the area around the town of Podljubelj and the valley below the Košuta Mountain. In the 14th century, people did not know how to explain the avalanche other than to attribute its creation to a terrible dragon, and thus the legend about the creation of Tržič came into being.

"Centuries ago more than half the settlement below Ljubelj consisted of smithies. A blacksmith there had an old rooster that went up to Košuta, where he laid an egg, and from the egg hatched a dragon. The dragon burrowed into the mountain and as he grew into an enormous beast this split the mountain in two. This triggered a rumbling rock avalanche that buried the village below the mountain. To save themselves the villagers ran into the valley. After a time they ran out of breath and stopped. This is the site of the present-day town of Tržič." (Source: visit-trzic.com website).

A few interesting facts about the dragon sculpture that greets you upon your arrival to the town of Tržič.

The story about the dragon is an important part of the intangible cultural heritage of the town of Tržič, which has been preserved through the generations. Members of the Ampus Culture and Arts Society under the leadership of Anže Bizjak, Anže Aljančič and Aleš Povalej made the dragon.

The sculpture weighs more than a ton and is made entirely of metal parts: nearly 200 m (218 yards) of round pipes used just for the construction and 900 m (984 yards) of approximately 4 cm wide metal strips cut from 1.5 mm thick sheets used for the finished appearance.

The head and individual segments are also cut from 1.5 mm thick sheets. Nearly 5 km (3.18 miles) of welding wire was used to weld together all the parts.

Do you know why is this dragon so important for Tržič?
