Route Description
A partly steep but safe path leads to the Šum Waterfall, which is located on the Nemiljšica Stream. It is hidden in a high jug-shaped basin and makes a deep pool. It is interesting how the stream forms a waterfall: first two jets fall into the upper pool, merge and fall together into the middle pool, from where the water is driven in a single jet into the third and deepest fall, creating a waterfall. Half of it flows strongly in jets to the left, and half of it disperses to the right into a triangle. The wintertime turns this spectacle into a beautiful icy curtain.
Access: Drive on the main road Ljubljana – Kranj and go in the direction of the village of Besnica at the second crossroads after entering the city of Kranj. Drive through the villages of Spodnja and Zgornja Besnica to the village of Nova vas where a road sign directs you towards the waterfall.
Although it was 33 °C on the day of our trip, the temperature at the waterfall dropped to at least 5 °C. Our 4-year-old daughter even complained that she was cold ;). Due to the mighty water flow, a pleasant cold breeze blows along the trail.
Interesting Facts
Slightly older children can also tackle the Rovnik Educational Trail. This is the first such path in the area of the municipality of Kranj, which runs on private forest grounds and has both learning and recreational purposes. At the end of the village of Nova vas in Besnica, an information board and signposts have been set up, leading you in the right direction. You can also get a leaflet (with several interesting facts about nature) at the Kranj Tourist Board, at local communities and the Kranj Town Hall.

If you are brave enough, you can also swim in the little pool at the bottom of the Šum Waterfall in the summer. We only dared to soak our feet in the freezing water ;).
