Route Description
Tržič has many different hiking trails in its surroundings. Thus, the meadows, valleys, forests and peaks are much more beautiful when experienced in peace and without crowds. This is how the local people present the footpaths. The Kriška gora Mountain is one of our favourite trip destinations and it has a huuuuge swing!
Access by car: Turn off the Ljubljana - Jesenice motorway at the Kranj - zahod exit and follow the road signs for Golnik. Continue in the direction of Senično where you pay attention to the road sign that says “Lovska koča, zavetišče Gozd”, which directs you steeply up the hill. Continue for about 2 km (1.42 miles) to the Zavetišče Gozd (Gozd Mountain Refuge) and park there. About 20 m (21 yards) in the opposite direction from the refuge, there is another possible trail to the Kriška gora Mountain. It is a poorly marked forest path on the right side, which is more suitable for children over 5 years of age. Smaller kids would need some extra motivation to beat it. The footpath has several benches where you can relax for a moment and then continue your hike.
Two other trails, which are shorter and more suitable for young hikers, lead from the Zgornje Vetrno Village and from the Gozd Village. When the weather is nice, the southern slope of the mountain is a popular spot for many paragliders.
The Kriška gora Mountain Hut (or “Koča na Kriški gori”) is an extremely popular destination east of Tržič, which offers fantastic views of the Ljubljana Basin and serves traditional homemade dishes. To the east of the hut is a paraglider take-off point, which is extremely interesting for children. Most mountaineers follow the marked path from the village of Gozd to the Kriška gora Mountain. You can leave your car in the marked parking lot (there are more of them on the way, for example at the Gozd Mountain Shelter or a little further next to the church).
When you hike with children, we suggest you take the trail that branches off just before the Gozd Mountain Refuge, because it has a very slow ascent. It soon brings you to a crossroads, where you decide between two paths: the left one, which is used by shepherds and has a breathtaking view, or you can take the right one that goes through the woods. The incline is quite steep in several sections, but at about a thousand meters above sea level, you reach the main ridge and soon arrive at the hut.
The Kriška gora Mountain Hut was crowned as the best high-altitude mountain lodge of 2020.
Download our GPX map and look at our route proposal. This trail has a gentle ascent, continues on the path used by shepherds (that has a lovely view) and descends on the marked mountain trail back to the car. You need to stop at the Gozd Mountain Refuge, where the kids can have fun on a climbing wall.

Interesting Facts
On the first Sunday in September, the streets of the city of Tržič come alive celebrating the Cobblers’ Sunday.
More than 10,000 visitors from all over Slovenia and neighboring countries come, and the tradition has been preserved for more than thirty years. Cobblers’ Sunday long ago became more than just a fair: it is also a town of crafts, purchases, sports, entertainment, sweepstakes, learning and fun, all in the spirit of spending a day both pleasantly and usefully. The greatest number of visitors are attracted by the bargains to be had at the fair. More than 300 stands offer a wide range of goods for purchase; among them, the selection of footwear at affordable prices attracts the greatest interest. The hungry and thirsty can taste the Slovenian culinary specialties, with particular attention given to traditional foods from Tržič at the Tržič Bržola Festival.
The Cobblers’ Sunday developed from the Tržič fairs. The town acquired market rights in 1492 for the sale of wine, livestock, and iron products. Thus there began a series of weekly as well as annual fairs, of which the most important was the fair for farm products on Angel Sunday (the first Sunday in September). The tradition of Cobblers’ Sunday is associated with the custom called "frejšpreh'nga". In the past, it was on this very day that cobblers' apprentices were promoted to journeymen.

At the end of the hike, you can sit down for a while, relax and admire the top of the Kriška gora Mountain, which you have just conquered. A cold refreshing drink and many delicious home-made dishes are a real treat for parents while the children play on an interesting outdoor playground (swings, climbing wall, houses ...).

The trip can be extended by a visit to the Gorenjska plaža Beach in Tržič, which has an outdoor pool. An excellent summer refreshment indeed!
