Route Description
When we first saw the photos of Klivnik Lake, we immediately went hunting for information on its location. The lake is a perfect location for a family trip that will not disappoint.
It was warm and sunny when we went on a trip to the Klivnik Lake. Although we expected the lake to be crowded, we were surprised to find that we were completely alone except for two fishermen.
With two little toddlers, our trip definitely was not calm, as we brought along some childish playfulness and loud singing into the surroundings.
The Klivnik Lake is situated in the heart of the Brkini Hills under the village Tominje near Ilirska Bistrica. It is three km long. Fishing is allowed on the entire length of the lake, except in the spawning place, which is suitably marked. The lake inspires you with beautiful nature and offers you the catch of trophy zanders as well as all kinds of trout. The lake is 2.8 km (1.13 miles) long and reaches a depth of 28 m (91 feet).
When you climb the macadam path towards the lake, you can spot a large dam. A little concrete in no way overshadows the beauty of the lake, but it does trigger a wave of questions from children.
The fishing boats anchored by the lake make the place resemble an abandoned fishing village. You cannot get around the whole lake on the trail that has appropriate terrain for baby strollers. The lakeshore has a lot of mud, which is very tempting for small children. Parents, remember to put on appropriate footwear :).
Our rest bench this time was quite an upside-down boat by the lakeshore. The lake and its surroundings offer plenty of opportunities for an unforgettable number of family photos.
Interesting Facts
The local people have another name for Klivnik, namely Mola, because there used to be a house here called “Pri Lumpih”. This is where things get a little confusing. Next to Mola Lake (the neighboring lake), which lies only a few km away, there is a house called “Pri Klivnikih”. We do not know how the naming was mixed up, since official records tell things differently than the locals do.

Let us mention that the food here is downright superb, as evidenced by the busyness at lunchtime! However, it paid off to wait a bit for a free table, as we loved their black-olive pizza with bacon and the delicious Karst pasta. It is finger-licking good!
The guesthouse is a proper museum! The walls are adorned with antique aircraft items and sports equipment, which make the bar unique.
There is actually a children’s plane at the front and our kids were hooked! They refused to go home and wanted to play for 10 minutes more, then it was another 10 minutes more and another and another…. :).
Looking at Postojna Airport and the planes taking off while sipping on some coffee at the Avio Pub patio has a special charm! I am sure all the parents agree with me.
We highly recommend you stop by for lunch here!

Visit the cold underground of the Trnska jama Cave in the company of the Ecomuseum of the Seasonal Lakes of Pivka.
Finally, summer is here! Warm temperatures, seaside, hills,…
All of you who like to hide from the hot summer sun, the Ecomuseum is a perfect location for a bit of refreshment.
Venture into the secret karst underground. Take a walk and find out how slowly time flows in caves, and how people too often live too fast, instead of breathing in life and nature, which is offered to us in such beautiful shades, especially here in the Pivka region.
For those who have never visited the cave with a flashlight and a helmet on their head, this will be a very special experience.
The museum’s mascot, the woodman's follower butterfly (“radovedni pisanček” in Slovene) accompanies you on an August trip to the mysterious underground of the Trnska jama Cave. For more information, contact the museum staff.
