Route Description
The abandoned village of Lemovje is a 45-minute walk from the village of Soča along a mountain path that leads to the Bavški Grintavec Mountain. There are no more permanent residents left, but it is worth a visit, as it is set on a picturesque plateau on the slopes of the Grintavec Mountain. The abandoned farms have typical local architecture and rare stony walls, which surround the abandoned meadows.
The trail rises steeply above the valley and the village of Soča, so it is suitable for advanced hikers. You soon cross a beech forest, and pass a stony wall from where you can see the beautiful Bavški Grintavec Mountain. Take a few more steps and you soon arrive at the houses and see the gorgeous village of Vrsnik with the surrounding hills on the other side.
How to get there: We set off from the Camp Jelinc to the starting point at the primary school, where you also park your car (large, recently renovated building on a hill on the right side of the road). Several metres in the opposite direction stands a small chapel next to a sign for the mountain path to the Bavški Grintavec Mountain. Follow the trail and look out for the right hand fork, just a few metres from the main road.
You can also circle around, using the hunting trail from Lemovje towards the Mala korita Troughs on the Soča River. Turn onto this path by going right across the meadow at the first house in Lemovje. In the middle of the meadow, just before the stony wall surrounding the forest, turn downwards and you will come to the hunting trail at the beginning of the forest. The trail across the meadows is partly visible and not difficult to follow in the summer months. When you reach the main road in the valley, you need another 10 minutes to get back to the starting point.
This trail to Lemovje will take you approximately 45 minutes. The path is very steep so you need to wear appropriate walking boots. We took the circular route which is not appropriate for children aged 6 and below. However, babies can be carried in a baby carrier (that is what we did) and our effort paid of the end, since this location is truly a magical place.
Interesting Facts
Above the village stands the Lemovje Nature Reserve, which covers a very old beech forest that was taken care of by the locals as an avalanche protection.

Vita, Olja and Juna Recommend
Stop by the Farm Jelinčič, a place that many domestic animals call their home. In the morning and in the evening, sheep walk through the camp, and it is impossible not to hear the braying of donkeys. Here, they cater to every dog’s needs and our puppy Juna can confirm that indeed. Every year, we attend the dog camp hosted here and they have an Agility dog training ground.
