Route Description

The Lovrenc Lakes are located on a high moor in the middle of the Maribor Pohorje Hills between Rogla Ski Resort and Ribniško Pohorje Mountain Ski Resort. Dwarf pines surround the small lakes, which have no surface inflow, and are watered by precipitation water exclusively. A pleasant wooden hiking trail to the Lovrenc Lakes enables our feet to stay dry. Walking on the meadow turf is strictly prohibited. The lookout tower at the edge of the moor is the perfect vantage point for a panoramic view of the lakes. During winter, the path is covered with snow and has bad visibility, so the visitors must find it on the opposite side of the Pohorje ski slopes by themselves. You start the hiking trail behind a log cabin or cross the ski slope where an accumulation lake is, where you will notice the first sign directing you onwards. This trip is suitable for children over 5 years, but it takes an adult at least 2 hours to finish it.

The path is relatively easy, a little steep in certain places, but nothing special. In summer, light trainers are enough unless you are browsing for blueberries; in that case, walking boots are a better alternative. This part of the hike is swampy, so you will find yourself in the mud quickly. This is why wooden planks cover the last few 100 meters (328 feet) of the forest path. The small lakes or bog windows are a few meters/feet big with a maximum depth of 1.2 m (3.11 feet). After the pasture was abandoned, they were overgrown with dwarf pines, which pass on both sides of the swamp on a steeper and draining slope into a spruce forest. Overall, there are 11-22 small lakes, depending on the extent and durability of the stagnant water. With a moderate walking speed, you reach the Lovrenc Lakes in about two hours. By visiting in the winter, we kind of missed the time to see the lakes due to the snow. However, there were no other visitors and we were able to experience the snow-covered moor and forest all by
ourselves. In the summer, it is more crowded.

When our relatives visited the beautiful lakes in May, we added their photos from their spring road trip to the website gallery.

...Is it snowing already? ...When the valley has a little snow, Rogla usually has an abundance of it, so do not forget to pack your sled.

The lakes are an interesting family trip in all seasons. During the summer, many birds will keep you company along the way.
