Emerald Adventure near the Ajdovski zid Wall
The zavod Škrateljc Institute has quite a few inspiring thematic trails prepared for both children and parents. All include a notebook to spice up the trip. You collect stamps, solve puzzles ... and above all, have fun and in the meantime learn some more interesting history facts.
How to get to the starting point: Turn off the motorway at the Vrhnika exit and continue on the main road in the direction of Logatec. After a while, look for the second road sign for Zaplana and exit the main road. Turn right and leave the car by the road. On the opposite side from the exit is the Zaplana bus station, so theoretically you can also get to the starting point by bus.
The footpath is well-marked, circular and about 4 kilometers (2.8 miles) long, so you can easily take the younger kids with you. The Ajdovski zid Wall has been abandoned for several centuries. It used to be around 7 km (4.6 miles) long, and it included 35 defensive towers. Two of them have been partially reconstructed, giving us an approximate idea of what the construction used to look like. The Ajdovski zid Wall represented the longest section of the Roman prison system claustra Alpium luliarum.
Pay attention to the Latin sayings and numbers carved into the rock, as you need to write them down in the notebook. If you look closely, maybe you also spot an emerald earthworm and his little friend, a Roman boy named Julian :).
Zaplana has always been a strategically important area, since it is positioned near the cities of Emona (Ljubljana), Nauportus (Vrhnika) and Logatikum (Logatec), which were all established in Roman times. This was the main road on the Vienna - Trieste direction, where the ancient main traffic and trade routes took place.

This restaurant is a popular eating-place in this area. The staff works hard to make the dishes interesting and delicious not just for adults, but for children as well. In summer, you can taste their refreshing ice cream and the kids can play with toys in the garden. After roaming around the Ajdovski zid wall, this restaurant is the perfect resting stop.

Wooden Roman soldiers placed on the trail really know how to pose for a camera! Mom kept placing us next to the soldiers and managed to take hilarious pictures. Bring your camera with because this trip has some seriously photogenic places.
