Route Description
The beautiful Zasavje Holy Mountain is a place straight out of a fairy tale. The surrounding area boasts 5 hiking trails and 3 car roads. It is actually not a mountain, but an 852-metre (2,795 feet) hill in the Municipality of Litija, situated on the Sava River’s right bank.
The old miners affectionately call it the Miner’s Lungs (“knajpova pljuča”), because hiking to this spot really clears one’s airways.
The Mary’s Nativity Church, built in the 6th century, stands on the site of an old pagan shrine.
Its defensive wall was built during the Turkish invasions, and its bell tower served as a lookout point. Next to the church is a rectory, which was built first in the romanesque and then in the gothic style. It was last remodeled in 1868 and its image was not changed to this day.
There is a hollow in one of the walls, which the locals call the Desert (“puščava”). You can use his/her imagination and play a guessing game called “Why did they use the Desert?” No one knows exactly what its purpose was; maybe someone had to serve his/her sentence there.
Regular visitors to this hill warn tourists that they must be careful and attentive to the wild animals that live in the forest. Wild boars in particular run across this territory. The view at the top is almost unbelievable in fine weather, as one can observe the Kamnik and Savinja Alps, the Julian Alps and the Zasavje and Litija hills.
Interesting Facts
The monument to the WWI victims that is a statue of a kneeling soldier sculpted by Tone Kralj has a special place on this hill. Other monuments erected by the priest Maks Kozjek give the whole surroundings a unique mark.

Near the town of Vače, in the village of Slivna, Slovenia has its own geometric center – GEOSS. This is actually the center of gravity of the country if we imagine it as a geometric figure. Slovenia is one of the three European countries that have a calculated center of gravity. Its geographic coordinates are 46°07′11.8″N 14°48′55.2″E and its elevation is 644.842 meters (2,115 feet).
In 1982, a rectangular granite pillar was erected here as a GEOSS monument featuring several carvings: the outline of Slovenia, the first stanza of the Slovenian national anthem, the geographical and geodetic coordinates and the markings for the four directions of the sky. A pillar with the dates of Slovenia's independence and accession to the United Nations, a pole with the Slovenian flag and a linden tree all stand on this site as well.
