Route Description
A lovely drive from Maribor or from Slovenj Gradec brings us to the town of Radlje ob Dravi. The beautiful landscape enables us to see the castle from both sides. Pay attention to the crossroads where the car road takes a turn towards the Radl Pass (Radeljski prelaz). Here, you will see a high rocky wall by the road, under which there is a parking lot next to the Marenberg Mansion (a popular wedding location due to its beautiful scenery). Cross the main road and start walking the trail opposite from the mansion. This very narrow path winds between two houses. Instructive armour-shaped boards, which are a part of the Green adventures of Lord Marenberg on Drava River thematic trail, offer a lot of new information. Children can actively participate and collect special points, which earn them a commemorative puzzle.
At the top, among the ruins of the castle, there is a surprise: an enchanted knight's sword, which was left there after the Lord Marenberg's death. The view you see over the city was named the green window of Carinthia. If you wish to exercise and move your body, take advantage of the trim track along the trail.
You can turn back and return in the same direction you came, but you can make a circle and follow the signs for the historical Forest Educational Trail. You then pass by the Huda luknja Cave, which can also be entered with the help of appropriate equipment. The circular version of the trip is suitable for hikers that are 4 years of age and older, because it descends quite steeply. The path coming from the direction of the Mansion is suitable for children aged 3 and up, however, they have to be well-prepared to walk.
The information boards and other adventures make time go by very quickly and the trip is over before you even know it.
Interesting Facts
Marenberg Castle was once the seat of a famous noble family. Its most important member was Sigfried Mahrenberg. In the middle of the 13th century, he successfully fought against the Hungarian army and none of the other noblemen of our lands surpassed his fame or honour. The castle had both good and hard times. It was captured and plundered by the Turks and burned down several times. After the last fire at the end of the 17th century, they stopped rebuilding it, and its inhabitants moved to the Marenberg Mansion, which is located at the starting point of the trip.

Feel the authentic Carinthian cuisine right here and lick your fingers while tasting the almost forgotten traditionally prepared dishes. Do “kibelflajš” or “mežerli” sound familiar to you by any chance? You will definitely want to find out what these dishes are and even return to this nicely furnished and fragrant inn. Here, you can even stay the night in small authentic Carinthian rooms, called “štibelci”.

After such an ascent, it feels good to cool off in the Radlje ob Dravi Water Park, and swim in the water cleaned by microorganisms instead of chemicals. Sounds fun, does it not? ☺
An old legend talks about Carinthian Merman (“Jezernik”). He allegedly moved to the lake from Mount St. Ursula (Uršlja gora) when the bells from a newly built church drove him away because they disturbed his peace.
Children, listen to the story abou Jezernik!
And a Legend about good Carinthian king Kralj Matjaž.
