Route Description
The Čukova jama Lake is one of the three lakes that make up the Bobovek lakes. If you are not a fan of massive tourism (which is typical of the Bled Lake and the Bohinj Lake), then this is a great idea for a trip. The three Bobovek lakes are clustered near the village of Bobovek in the Upper Carniola statistical region. Their total area is about 4.5 hectares big. The largest lake in the north is called Krokodilnica (Crocodile lake), the one in the south Čukova jama (Owl’s cave) and the smallest one in the west Ledvička (Little kidney). At the beginning of the 20th century, a swampy meadow was formed in abandoned clay pits.
The circular path takes you past all three lakes.
Interesting Facts
In 1905, the Bobovek brickyard began excavating clay. In 1953, mammoth remains dating back to about 180,000 years ago were found in the area. In 1965, preserved remains of a fish called Leuciscus leuciscus were excavated. In 1971, the clay ceased to be exploited and the former clay pits were flooded. Today, the lakes are overgrown with aquatic and riparian vegetation and are the habitat of many different animal and bird species.
Due to ornithological, paleontological and other special features, the lakes (ponds) are protected and declared a natural landmark.

The Čukova jama Lake is perfect for swimming in the summer and for skating in winter. Of course, all at your own risk! You can also enjoy a picnic and spend an afternoon by the lake looking at the beautiful nature. It is not unusual to see people completely covered in lake mud. The locals believe that the clay in the lakes has healing properties.
