Route Description
Sevnica, the centre of the Municipality of Sevnica, is a medium-sized town located in Slovenia. With around 5,000 inhabitants, it is an important local centre, employing many people from the near and far surroundings, especially in the textile and wood industry factories. The town is increasingly merging with the village of Boštanj on the right bank of the Sava River.
In the old town center, the central part of which is the Glavni trg Square, several old buildings have been preserved. There stands the small Lower Sevnica Castle, which was built in 1613 and is the seat of the municipal administration. There is also a restored chapel with the statue of St. Martin from the 17th century, the neo-romanesque St. Nicholas Church and St. Florian from 1443.

What is the origin of the town’s name?
The settlement was first attested in written records in 1275 in German as Liechtenwalde (and as Lihtenwalde in 1309, Lietenueld in 1344, Liechtenwald in 1347, and Sielnizza in 1581). The Slovene name is probably derived from a hydronym referring to Sevnična Creek (first attested in 1488 as Zellnitz) and is not connected to the German name, which refers to deciduous woods. In the past, the German name of the town was Lichtenwald.
