Route Description
Have you visited Postojna Cave, but were not allowed to touch the cave stalactites? Have you been to the Predjama Castle, where you have heard all about the brave knight Erasmus of Predjama?
The Notranjska Museum in Postojna reveals many secrets of the mysterious karst world. Children of all ages can have an unforgettable experience, touch real stalactites and explore museum exhibitions!
Do your kids love the Ice Age or Night at the Museum movies? At the Notranjska Museum in Postojna, visitors can see the skeletons of Ice Age animals including a cave bear and a steppe bison and the remains of a cave lion, a hyena, a rhinoceros and even a hippopotamus. Children can even try assembling a bear skeleton.
The kids will get to know the “human fish” more closely and study examples of cave fauna through microscopes. The museum also has a special section for all young researchers, where they can try their hand at dissolving karst limestone like real scientists.
The brave knight, Erasmus of Predjama, defended Predjama Castle from all enemies and guarded a rich treasure chest! The same valuables from Predjama Castle, today on display to visitors to the Notranjska Museum Postojna, consists of the following items: a small cup, three goblets, a drinking chalice with cover, another drinking chalice, a windmill cup, a salt cellar and a pair of candlesticks.
As a special experience for all who would like to take a break after exploring the museum, we recommend watching a 3D-movie, which will transport you to an old era of caving, when there was no electricity, let alone the red train that goes into the Postojna Cave now. Interesting, isn't it? Since 26 February 2015, the Notranjska Museum in Postojna has been hosting a permanent museum exhibition on karst - the Karst Museum. The Karst Museum exhibition is an important new acquisition of Slovenia and represents a unique point for the presentation of classical karst.

Welcome to the land of bag makers (“torbarji” in Slovene)!
You must be wondering: “Bag makers? What are bag makers?”. Legend has it that once upon a time there lived a large terrible dragon in Postojna Cave. No one in the area was strong enough to kill the monster and save the people. Fortunately, the resourceful and brave shepherd named Jakob came to the rescue, who tricked the dragon by bringing him calf skin filled with lime substance for a meal. When the monster drank water after a delicious lunch, it blew up all over! The locals erected a statue at the beginning of the village of Šmihel pod Nanosom in gratitude for the man’s courage. They even made a bag from dragon skin, and since then the people of Postojna have been known as “bag makers” (“torbarji” in Slovene).
