Idrija boasts the titles Alpine Tity of the Year 2011 and European Destination of Excellence for 2011 (EDEN). It is known for the second largest mercury mine in the world, just behind the Spanish Almaden. The rich heritage of both mines has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 30 June 2012. The Kluže Fort is one of the most visited cultural sites in the area and represents an important monument to the defense against enemy invasion. Take a walk from here to the Hermann Fort. It was built to support the Kluže Fort, but was severely damaged by Italian shelling at the beginning of WWI.

Above the emerald green Soča River not far from the town of Kobarid stands the Kozjak Stream gorge, where the 15-metre-high Kozjak Waterfall is located. The nice walking path has several small wooden bridges and ends with a terrace that has a mystical view of the rocky amphitheatre enclosing a white beam of water.

This natural monument is a 5-meter (16 feet) long and slightly over a meter (3 feet) thick stone bridge, smoothly polished by the water, looming above the Kožbanjšček Stream on top of a gorge. The Kožbanjšček Stream carved three pools into the streambed during the process of overcoming a 10-meter (32-feet) cliff.

Lemovje Abandoned Village-Trenta Valley

The abandoned village of Lemovje is a 45-minute walk from the village of Soča along a mountain path that leads to the Bavški Grintavec Mountain. There are no more permanent residents left, but it is worth a visit, as it is set on a picturesque plateau on the slopes of the Grintavec Mountain. The abandoned farms have typical local architecture and rare stony walls, which surround the abandoned meadows.

Soča Circular Trail

The Soča River flows out of a karst spring in the lower part of the Velika dnina Slope, a few tens of meters above the bottom of the Zadnja Trenta Valley, at an altitude of 990 m (3,248 feet). In spring and summer, the uppermost part of the Soča River is a beautiful alpine stream. It flows in the form of small waterfalls past towards the bottom of the valley, where a small tributary from the Trenta Valley joins in.

The Vipava River has a total of seven permanent springs and all are located right here in the town of Vipava. Its main sources are the Podskala and Podfarovž double springs, located only a few meters from the Main Square, behind Lanthieri's manor. The other sources of the river spring up behind Tabor, Podlipca, Jama and Sleženec. The Vipava River’s springs are unique in Europe due to their delta-like semblance.

The Virje Waterfall is located on the Glijun Stream, near the village of Plužna. The Glijun Stream is one of the rare karstic springs that never dry up. The spring water, which emerges among many stones of glacial material, reaches up to 7ºC and is very cold. Nevertheless, many are brave enough to plunge into its depths.
