Route Description

The Gradiško jezero Lake is a high water reservoir located in the Municipality of Lukovica, near the village of Gradišče.

The lake was created as a high water reservoir on the Drtijščica Stream, which protects the Ljubljana - Maribor highway from torrential waters. A 3-kilometer (1.15-mile) footpath that surrounds the lake is accessible by car for the local forest owners only. Motor vehicle traffic is prohibited for non-locals and is secured with roadblocks. This makes the trail around the lake an ideal promenade.

A part of the so-called Bandits Route (“Rokovnjaška pot”) also runs by the lake and continues past the surrounding hilltops, winding 55 km. It is possible to access the shore from the town of Lukovice or the town of Moravče. The lake is also a favorite place for those seeking recreation and fishing. At its southwestern end is a fish spawning ground. Alternatively, you can just go for a walk in the company of the swans and ducks living there.

Interesting Facts

Two folk tales mention a lake that was once at the foot of the present-day village of Gradišče. Nearby stood the Gradišče Castle and the Rožek Castle. Apparently, a dragon lived in the lake. The local nobleman’s daughter should have been sacrificed to him, but a beggar, who was richly rewarded for it, then killed the dragon.

The second tale tells of the two noblemen who sailed around the lake to visit each other and fished together. At the request of a nobleman from Rožek Castle, his subjects had to dig a dam at the village of Kurnik towards the village of Trnjava. The water flowed into the Radomlja River; the lake dried up and was turned into pasture.

The lake has been hosting sailing regattas (with 12 mini sailing boats) every June since 2015. The event is coordinated by the Adam Ravbar Sailing Club, which regularly organizes regattas in Dalmatia and Lake Bohinj.

There are a few more tourist points near the lake that are worth visiting. Especially interesting are the village of Gradišče with the striking St. Margaret’s Church and the hike to the Limbarska gora Hill (which takes about two hours). At the top of the hill northwest of the church, evidence of a prehistoric fort was found, which gave the village of Gradišče its name. The Rožek Castle ruins stretch in the southeast direction of the lake.

Find the Limbarska gora Hill among our described trips.
